The Register’s Approach

A costume can be a record of work, identity, movement and adaptation. Its care should preserve that complexity.

Evidence before appearance

Pavilionreelbiscut is an independent informative website about historical costume conservation. It addresses collection volunteers, students and custodians who need to understand what to observe, what to record and when to seek professional help.

We organise the subject around decisions: examining a garment, choosing a support, weighing treatment and planning display. We do not treat visible wear as a defect to be removed by default. An alteration, stain or repair may reveal something that a pristine reconstruction would conceal.

What belongs within the register

Our scope includes costumes from theatre and cinema, garments in cultural collections, and the mixed materials that make their care challenging. We distinguish broad preventive principles from object-specific treatment. Diagrams are explanatory; they are not patterns for making a mount or instructions for repairing an original.

We recognise that technical examination alone does not determine significance. Makers, wardrobe teams, performers, researchers and source communities may hold essential knowledge. Cultural restrictions and permissions deserve a place in collection records and care decisions.

How to read the references

Links point to established collections, professional bodies and standards organisations. They provide context and routes to further reading. A link does not mean that an organisation has reviewed this website, approved a particular statement or endorsed the operator. We are not affiliated with the museums or professional bodies cited.

Standards and guidance change. Confirm current recommendations and their suitability for your collection, building and jurisdiction. Where a broad principle cannot safely resolve a practical question, seek a qualified conservator rather than extending it into a treatment recipe.

Corrections and useful questions

We welcome clearly located corrections, broken-link reports and suggestions for questions that custodians genuinely encounter. Include the page address and the wording concerned. Avoid sending confidential collection information, security details or personal data about performers and donors.

The enquiry worksheet helps prepare a plain-text message. It does not send anything. We do not provide emergency response, valuations, authentication or a remote treatment service.
